The Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney, B.C. has received a $250,000 grant from the facility's founding family through a bequest from Claude Winspear. The money has been matched by the B.C. Arts Renaissance Fund, for a total of $500,000 to be used for new programming at the theatre. The money will be held in an endowment fund at the Victoria Foundation and will likely generate $20,000 to $30,000 in interest annually, said executive director Debora Johns. She said the funding would probably bring about 10 more acts a year to the community, since the average artists' fee is about $2,500 to $3,500. "And we can start putting together a proper season." Johns added the centre wants to create opportunities for "our community to experience Canada's wealth of professional touring artists." It could develop its professional program, perhaps including a subscription series, she said. The centre, which was named in honour of the Winspear family, is operated by the not-for-profit Sidney and North Saanich Memorial Park Society and is a multi-purpose facility at the corner of Pat Bay Highway and Beacon Avenue. www.sanscha.com
