TOPIC: CHOOSING LANGUAGE THAT EMPOWERS THE ARTS
Why ask for a "grant" when you can charge a "management fee"?
In 1993, while we were in the midst of the fundraising and design phase for the 800-seat theatre in Nanaimo, we brought in a guest speaker from Tacoma, Washington. He told the story of Tacoma's downtown revitalization efforts, which included the development of several cultural facilities. The City of Tacoma did not give a "grant-in-aid" to these facilities; rather they paid a non-profit society a management fee to operate the facilities in an entrepreneurial manner that responded to community needs. In Nanaimo, the theatre is owned by the City of Nanaimo and operated by The Port Theatre Society. During the negotiations in 1997 with the City to secure the first "License to occupy and manage" their facility, we agreed upon a "management fee" that the City pays quarterly to the Society. The choice of words has proven to be very important as it rightly reflects the relationship between the Society as operator and the City as owner of the theatre. When it came time last fall to renegotiate the "management agreement" as it is now called, it was a rather straightforward matter for the City to agree to include an annual cost of living increase to the "management fee". The City sees the value of paying for the excellent cultural management services provided by the professional staff of The Port Theatre Society. The Society proudly reports to the public on the value that the City's investment generates for the community. Are you still using any language that is holding your organization back from being recognized for the full value that you contribute to your community, your province and your country?

Dance In Vancouver - November 14-18, 2007 - This biennial event is a chance for presenters from across Canada, North America and around the world to view the eclectic contemporary dance of Canada's West Coast, network with colleagues, and sample a distinctive artistic milieu, through an exciting program of performances, studio presentations, discussions and roundtables. It offers a limited number of complimentary hotel rooms, courtesy of our neighbours the Holiday Inn Vancouver Downtown Hotel & Suites, for presenters who are visiting from out of town.
The program of mainstage performances showcases excerpts of works by twelve BC-based companies in four mixed programs, compiled by guest curator Stephen White, Executive Producer of Dance Victoria:
* Program One features new solos from Noam Gagnon (one half of the internationally successful company The Holy Body Tattoo); Lee Su-Feh of battery opera, whose awards include Bagnolet and the Alcan Arts Award; and Sarah Chase, whose work has been seen across Canada and at major European festivals.
* Program Two brings together the latest works by two established companies: Wen Wei Dance follows up last year's successful CanDance Network tour with a new work inspired by The Four Seasons; Lola Dance's Provincial Essays is choreographed by Lola MacLaughlin, whose inventive work is influenced by her studies at the Freie Universitat in Berlin and German Ausdruckstanz.
* Program Three highlights the cross-cultural fertilization of the West Coast, with the distinctive butoh style of Kokoro Dance in an excerpt from their recent work To-morrow & To-Morrow & To-Morrow; Flamenco Rosario's Los Cuatro Vientos, inspired by the history of Canada's different peoples; and Coyote Percussive Arts Performance Association's riveting First Nations urban dance drama, Blood Alley.
* Program Four presents local favourite Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg's clever and amusing character studies Nick and Juanita; repertory company Dancers Dancing, headed by former Martha Graham Dance Company principal Judith Garay; Kinesis Dance, in a revival of Paras Terezakis' signature 1994 work A Parcel of Men; and MachineNoisy, a new company directed by Delia Brett and Daelik, whose work has been presented in European cities including Berlin and Brussels.
New this year are the Late Night Lounges - a chance to talk dance, relax, unwind… and watch more dance in a lounge-style setting. battery opera, who have developed the concept with their anarchic Bob's Lounge events, and mmHoP, Martha Carter's dynamic fusion of contemporary, ballet, street dance and multimedia, will anchor these events.
Studio presentations will offer informal showings of new creations by some intriguing artists. Panels and roundtable discussions will cover topics such as exporting dance, outreach, and touring. There will of course be informal opportunities to network with artists and other presenters. Full details will be confirmed over the summer.
