Creating Competitive Advantage for Canadian Managers/Artist to
Broaden, Deepen and Diversify Arts Participation - Jerry Yoshitomi

Acquiring the Core Fundamentals to Increase Audience Participation
and Touring Engagements

Friday, March 31, 2006 — 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Cost:
$321.00 - Members (2nd Delegate - $267.50)
$428.00 - Non-members (2nd Delegate - $321.00)
(Includes Lunch & GST)

In recent years, performing arts presenters in Canada, United States, Australia and New Zealand have learned and put into practice a new framework (based on current research and innovative practice) for engaging audiences and communities to participate in the arts. They are seeking artists and managers knowledgeable in the new framework and skilled in developing new methods for audience engagement. Learning this new framework will provide a competitive advantage for Canadian Managers/Artists.

This workshop was suggested by Canadian Artist Managers who’ve participated in workshops previously sponsored by CCI-Ontario, CAPACOA, the BC Touring Council and the Vancouver Arts Alliance. They’re now able to more fully understand the changing landscape and want to share the new knowledge with others.

The workshop will be tailored for managers/artists to acquire new knowledge and techniques in a logical framework to develop/book work that aligns with presenters’ new understandings about:

  • how artistic work resonates with audiences;
  • developing new services/programs or add value to existing ones;
  • identifying key steps in the customer’s decision making process, as well in the presenter’s decision making process
  • addressing the barriers that discourage participation, activating drivers that encourage participation
  • better reveal the benefits and value artists have already provided to customers, audiences, students, parents, etc.

It will also present concepts that support the work of artists to

  • directly connect and stay in touch with audiences/fans
  • use those connections to encourage repeat bookings by presenters
  • activate the asset that’s already been created by past performances/tours to increase income and support

Through interactive methods and online technologies, you’ll learn and develop new techniques to share with artists based on current research and innovative practice. You’LL participate in

  • an advance online survey to ascertain your most pressing concerns
  • online readings materials
  • optional follow-up conversations on April 1st or 2nd - to discuss new methods one-on-one or in informal groups
  • follow-up online conference calls as you’re putting your new knowledge to work.

Who Should Attend?

Artists Managers, Company Directors and Independent Performing Artists. While primarily for this group, presenters and producing company representatives can also gain from the framework and methods to be presented. We encourage sending more than one person from a group/organization, as collaborative learning speeds innovation.

Gerald D. (Jerry) Yoshitomi is an independent cultural facilitator, engaged by foundations, public arts agencies, arts organizations and individual artists to read, research, and provoke innovative new practices, with just in time knowledge to increase:

  • participation in the arts
  • personal benefits and public value of the arts, artists and arts organizations
  • adaptability, creativity and leadership in changing environments
  • earned and contributed income

Methods from his writings/workshops have been successfully implemented by several thousand arts workers and arts organizations in the United States, Canada and most recently Australia and New Zealand to increase attendance and earned/contributed income. See Engage Now! An Arts Worker’s Guide to Deepening Experience and Strengthening Participation in the Arts www.artsmarketing.org/marketingresources/files/JYNotes-Apr022003.pdf

Jerry served as Facilitator for the START (State Arts Agency) Initiative of the Wallace Foundation, managed by Arts Midwest. Thirteen State Arts Agencies formed Communities of Practice to increase participation in the arts and reveal the public value of the arts to their states. See Revealing the Public Value of the Arts in Ohio www.fuel4arts.com/files/attach/RevealingPublicValue_220905.doc
and Creating Public Value Through State Arts Agencies www.artsmw.org/start/CreatingPublicValue.pdf.

Mr. Yoshitomi is
  • Lead Consultant on Information and Network Strategies for LINC - Leveraging Investments in Creativity, a national initiative to improve the lives/conditions of artists
  • Facilitator for a collaborative of Performing Arts Presenters at major research universities.

He chaired the National Task Force on Presenting and Touring the Performing Arts, resulting in the 1989 seminal report, An American Dialogue. Jerry chaired three panels at the National Endowment for the Arts, served four years on the California Arts Council, was Treasurer of the Music Center of Los Angeles County and was the Executive Director of the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center. He’s a graduate of Stanford University with a Masters in Public Administration from Arizona State University.
